What is Autism? Bing's Dictionary gives a good short overview-
"condition disturbing perceptions and relationships: a disturbance in psychological development in which use of language, reaction to stimuli, interpretation of the world, and the formation of relationships are not fully established and follow unusual patterns"
What does that actually mean? People with Autism often don't precieve things well in social situations. They may not be able to read facial expressions, body language, or may not use eye contact. Many people with Autisum don't understand sarcasm. They often have sensory issues, such as not liking the feel of clothes most people find comfortable or finding sounds to loud that most other people can easily tolerate. People with autisum may become fustrated and throw tantrums.
There are different types of Autism and different levels of functioning. Some people with autism never speak while others can go on to regular colleges with little help. Asperger's Syndrome is mild form of autisum. Autisum may also be refered to as ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
Feel free to ask questions.

  • ExSanguinate 18 ExSanguinateMy brother is autistic, on the higher end, and is absolutely amazing. Love him to bits. People don't understand him, because of his routines, his sarcasm, his inability to control what he says in certain situations. He graduated from the same high school I did, and is working in a job with other autistic children, and goes on the internet to chat with people, because he doesn't really like to hang with people, like I do. He does go bowling occasionally with his friends.

  • Cappygirl 75 CappygirlAsperger's Syndrome is mild form of autisum This is not really true. Asperger's have been removed from the newest diagnostic manual (DSMV V). Its all Austism now. I have one child diagnosed with austism and one with aspergers. But are young adults now and both are very challenging. Often the one with asperger's is the most difficult. Ty tho for posting this information. The more we get it out there the more change we have of meeting ppl who understand so we can have more friends and positive interactions with others. God Bless
  • cev88 26 cev88@Cappygirl I posted this in 2013, Asperger's was still a diagnosis then. Thank you for reminding me to update my blog.
