Now I use pixlr, it's a little secret, just use it to the the lines clean and stuff, I use it mainly for the layers 1 make a base
2 duplicate the layer
3 make a new layer
4 put the new layer in between the two other layers, then you wont color over the base.

remember that will only work if you have the picture transparent

save the image a png

Oh yeah also, for maradoll not much I can say draw some shading blur it with the blur tool don't over use the blur tool though....
you can look up tutorials for drawing faces and stuff, need any more help let me know.
