The Basics and your First Battle:
To win your first battle you need to do the following:
1) Train your pet's health, speed and strength stats at the gym on Minipet Island. Health allows your pet to take more damage before being defeated, whereas a combination of strength and speed contribute to the damage your pet deals.
I have tested this using a new pet, and I would advise having 5 health, 5 strength and 5 speed minimum before tackling your first battle. We can ignore other stats for now
2) Equip your pet with 2 weapons and 2 wands. My recommendations for cheap weapons are 2 x Bough Bow or 2 x Grassy Axe which can bought from shop search. Both do the same damage so buy whichever is cheapest at the time.
For wands use 2 magic staffs. The most MP efficient ones I would recommend the Kirin Magic Staff, which can be bought from shop search and can heal you for 72 health per turn. You can also use pet specific ones bought from the weapons shop. Ex. For a murfin, you would want 2 murfin magic staff, which can be purchased from the weapons shop. However, these will not heal as much.
To equip your weapons, simply use the items in your inventory and equip them to the pet you have been training at the gym. Your pet can have a maximum of 5 weapons/wands equipped. To remove wands, go to your pet's profile, click "weapons", and then just click any weapons you want to remove from your pet.
3) Buy a cheap, and easy trading card. I would recommend the Appy Trading Card or Mara Trading Card. To see how much damage a card will do in a turn, visit this site here :

The two I have recommended will each do 3 damage per turn
4) Make sure your pet is fully healed up and ready to fight. Use the Bubble Pit in Jenoa to get your pet into shape for your battle.
If your pet is not at full health after this, then make sure you heal on your very first turn of battle!
5) Battle! Battle your trading card of choice. Attack using your 2 weapons. If the trading card will knock your pet out in the next turn, then make sure to heal on this turn. For Appy, you will take 3 damage per turn. So, if you have 3 or less health this turn, make sure to heal. Repeat attacking and healing when necessary, and you should win your first battle!

What Now? :
You now should have won your first battle! If battling is something you wish to further dabble in, then all you need to do is repeat the process! Continue training your pet in the gym and start attempting to battle harder cards! I have also written a second guide which explains things in greater detail.
How to Stat Faster and Cheaper - Double Training
Every week one of four costumes will be voted to give double stats the following week, starting Sunday. Look out for cheap/basic costumes (blue, coral, aqua etc.) as these will normally win the vote without fail, unless there isn't a basic costume available to vote for that week. If you aren't too sure on costumes then check in about halfway through the week and vote, and you'll be able to see which costume has the most votes. You will need to transform your pet into that costume (species doesn't matter) to get double training the next week. You can do this either by buying that costume from shop search, checking the boutique daily to see if it comes into stock, or buying a non-le enchanted plushie of that colour and using it on your pet (this will change it's species). As you'll want to be making the most of double statting as possible, it's generally advised NOT to have the pet you're statting be Limited Edition, or get too attached to it's current species/costume.
Pet Dailies for Stats
Following on from my final point in my previous paragraph, it is of the upmost importance to be flexible with your pet and letting it change often, as some dailies that can reward stats can also change your pet.
A list of dailies that can be used for stats is as follows:
Clock Tower
Eleka Fountain (Magic only - can make pet sick)
Foxfire Pond (Need map)
Ice Caves (Magic only - Need map)
Operations Portal
Pixie Dice
Poison Pit (Need map)
Sewer Pipes (Need map)
Venomous Victory (Need map)
Vortex Park Reservoir (Need map)
Whirlpool (Need map)
Games can also reward stats, usually for achieving a certain score. This includes both the games you can play 3 times per day (ex. Monty's Escape) and games you can play for BP/RP (ex. Sewer Struggle and Extract Enpiah) where landing on certain tiles can reward stats.
There are other games, but I highly recommend you familiarize yourself with the games on your own to determine which are worth your time playing.
Other Information/FAQ
You may notice that I recommend training health, strength and speed. You won't need to train defence, as it currently doesn't do anything. You will however earn Kirin rewards, and it may be updated in the future, so it's worth keeping this stat level with the others for now.
Always keep your level stat as low as possible until you have to increase it. This helps to keep crystal costs low, and gym times short. Your other stats can be equal to double your pet's level, +1. ie A level 10 pet can have 21 strength,speed,defence,health, but must increase level to increase these further.
Elite gym stats (stamina, co-ordination and balance) do not affect battling in any way. These instead are used in the Olympics to get your pet into a better category, which can earn more Olympic Points.
